Day One: Senior Olympic Summer Games

Posted: Updated:

It was day one of the senior Olympic games here in Great Falls and while most events begin tomorrow, there were still a few games going on today including the newest Olympic event, Pickleball.

Mike Creighton, Missoula, "It's fun. Everybody's nervous so I'm sure those guys were nervous too but we had a good match and it was a lot of fun. And that's the thing about pickle ball - a lot of comradery, people are real social, it's a great sport."

Golf is another great sport which was also going on today. Despite the threat of rain, groups were still able to play and enjoyed getting out on the course.

George Geise, Great Falls, "It's been fun. We started at 11 o'clock this morning and had the putting contest and driving contest, then we had lunch and we got 18 holes of golf. We have only about 30 players, I think the weather might have held us down a little bit but we're lucky we're playing. It's not windy, which is always a plus in Great Falls and we're having a real good time."

Also today at Memorial Stadium was the race walk event. Jonathan Matthews, an Olympic trial race walker won the 1500 meter race and was happy with his performance.

Jonathan Matthews, Helena, "It feels great. I haven't raced in a couple of years due to some injuries and it's nice to be back racing. Racing is different than training and i was happy surprised by how fast I was able to go today."

The Senior Olympic summer games has 15 total event categories and will continue on Friday and finish up on Saturday.
