Carroll College head men’s soccer coach Doug Mello has announced that Jared Thielke formerly of the University of Saint Mary (Kans.) has signed a letter of intent to play for the Fighting Saints.

Thielke, a 6-foot-2 goalkeeper will be coming to Helena this fall as part of Carroll College’s first-ever men’s soccer recruiting class.

“Jared has cat-like reflexes, he saves an awful lot of shots and will add a comforting level to the defense with his great high school experience and success,” Mello said.

Thielke, originally from Conway, Arkansas played his prep soccer at St. Joseph High School before attending University of Saint Mary and playing one season as a goalkeeper.

“Jared split time last season and that year of college experience will prepare him to contribute immediately. He has a booming punt and is excellent coming out against crosses,” Mello added.

In high school, Thielke played four years and received All-Conference honors as a freshman and sophomore.  As an upperclassman, he was a team captain and garnered All-State recognition during his junior and senior seasons.

Thielke was voted team MVP of the Arkansas AAA All-Star squad and played for the Arkansas State Olympic Development Program.  His club team, the Arkansas Rush, captured state championships during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

“In this first year, I hope to help start the new program off on a strong note and help Carroll men’s soccer gain a good reputation,” Thielke said.

Thielke, who has three years of playing eligibility remaining, plans to study psychology at Carroll College.  In addition to his success on the soccer pitch, Thielke was part of his high school’s 2013 State Bowling Championship Team.

“I was attracted by the high standards of Carroll College and am excited to begin this new chapter of my life with the men’s soccer team,” Thielke added.

The Fighting Saints men’s team will begin play this fall with a full schedule under the direction of recently hired Doug Mello previously of Hendrix College (Arkansas).
