John Lagerquist Hanging up Mic for Saints

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -  The ripple effect of Bruce Parker's departure from Carroll is still in effect. After 26 years of being the voice of Carroll football and basketball, John Lagerquist announced on Facebook he is hanging up the mic.

"Last year at the end of the year I told Bruce 'I don't know if I want to do this again.' And then he said 'Will you do it for me? As long as I'm here will you stay here?' I said sure," said Lagerquist. "Well when he was leaving it was a pretty easy decision at that point because I just didn't want to do it at that point, especially the travel."

During his time at Carroll John has been there for countless conference championships along with all six of their football national championships, but one stands out above the rest.

"There's one game where we won the national championship against St. Francis in 2004," said Lagerquist. "We got the ball back with about a 1:17 left and we take it down the field and we kicked it on fourth down, right through the uprights, game over. That was really an amazing game because it was so gripping."

Despite all the long trips and great games, the highlight of John's career, were the people along the way.

"I've met so many good people," said Lagerquist. "I've met so many good kids. That's the part I'm going to miss. I mean, there's such great individuals that have gone through here. And when you're doing the games you get to know the kids a lot more personally. You just get to know them on a whole different basis than just watching them."

Times are certainly changing at Carroll College. And though John is hanging up the mic, he'll always be a Saint.
