Saints Youth Basketball Camp Showcasing Young Talent

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - Rachelle Sayers is all about shaping the future of basketball. Whether it's recruiting for the Saints or molding today's youth.

"These are our future," said Sayers. "Obviously future fans, and I think probably in that mix some future Saints. So it's important that they get in here and that we get to know them and their faces and names and hopefully they grow up being Saints fans."

Each player for the Saints coaches up a group of girls during the four day camp. And early on their were some concerns.

"Coming in day one none of them knew how to go left right," said Saints freshman guard Bailey Pasta. "Every single one of my teammates on my team can do left right. They've improved so much."

"It's awesome how much they can learn in four days," added Saints freshman Mika Robinson, "and they pick it up really quick and they all try to get better so it's pretty sweet."

"We love this age group," said Sayers. "There's so much for them to learn, and you're right, these are our future."

But of course, this camp isn't about the Saints players having fun. It's about the kids! Among some of the best performances was Jamie Pickens, who captured almost every single award at the camp.

"I worked hard, played with the players on my team," said Pickens. "Like worked with my team and played good! It doesn't take just one. You need to work with players. You need to know them and work hard."

"It was awesome. I learned a lot of things," said team purple cone dribbling champion Kayla Almquist. "Like V-cuts, L-cuts, screen away, and all that.

So whether any of these young hoopsters become Saints in the future, or just good solid ball players who like to have fun, coach Sayers can be sure the future of Helena basketball is in good hands.
