Getting ready to light the fuse in East Helena

Posted: Updated:
EAST HELENA -

East Helena is making last minute preparations for tonight's big sky fireworks show.

"We've got a new system this year. So the show should be a little bit more consistent. Less gaps in there, takes out the human error, so it should be pretty good," Pyrotechnician for the Kyle Brown said.

This year's firework show in East Helena is expected to run for 20 minutes. Brown said it takes about 18 hours to set up prior to lighting up the sky, but these aren't your average fireworks.

"The largest one will be eight inches in diameter," Brown said. "They go a hundred feet per inch in diameter. So a 12 inch shell will go 1,200 feet in the air."

Brown said he loves the grand finale, but he sees the rest of the show from a different perspective.

"My favorite part is the grand finale, seeing all the shells come out of the tube," Brown said. "I don't look up, I rather look out of the tube. The boom is little bit bigger out of the tube it seems and just a bit closer."

Spectators are encouraged to draw their attention to the skies at about 10:30 p.m. to see the show.

ENTIAT, Wash. - A burn out operation is planned for Tuesday morning in an effort to establish a secure line in the bottom of the canyon where the Mills Canyon Fire is burning. Burning material rolling downhill and igniting spot fires on the north side of Swakane Canyon have caused concerns and indicate a vulnerability to a fire escape and repeatedly expose firefighters to very steep terrain and rolling material.
