NBCRightNow.com - It is definitely looking like it is going to be a hot week. If you are planning on spending any time outdoors there are some precautions you should take.

A local dermatologist says if you cannot avoid being in the sun wear a hat and try not to forget your sunscreen

Doctor Jeremy Peck practices at DermaHealth in Richland, he recommends wearing protective clothing like long sleeves and wearing sun glasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

When it comes to sunscreen, 30 SPF and above works but you should try choosing zinc and titanium sunscreens rather than chemical ones because those start working right away.

"A typical chemical sunscreen, avobenzone is a good example takes about a half hour to work so if you put it on and you go right outside you have a half hour of unprotected time when you're still exposed to the sun's harmful radiation," Dr. Peck said adding protecting your skin from the sun not only prevents skin cancer and sun burns but also helps keep your skin looking young longer.

If you want to learn more about protecting your skin, DermaHealth in Richland is hosting a free skin-care event Thursday. They are located at 1305 Fowler St.

The event goes from noon to 8 p.m. They will have free skin cancer screenings and a sunscreen booth.
