Posted: Updated:
University of Great Falls head wrestling coach Caleb Schaeffer has announced his recruiting class for the 2014-15 season.

The class includes 15 freshmen and three transfers. Among the signees are eight Montana natives including Great Falls High’s Austin Shupe and C.M. Russell High’s Isiah Yates.

“We were very fortunate to sign some of the best Montana talent,” Schaeffer said. “If we can keep the best Montana kids in the state to wrestle for the University of Great Falls, we have the ability to be one of the best programs in the country.”

Joining the Argonauts at 125 pounds are Benny Dixon of Mountain View (Vancouver, Wash.) High, who placed third at the Class 3A state meet last year; Silas Hopkins of Bozeman (Mont.) High, who was ranked third in the state prior to a season-ending injury; and Brandon Ashford of Centennial (Boise, Idaho) High, who was a state champion as a senior.

At 141 pounds are two-time Montana Class AA state champion Shupe, and Travis Vermulm of Cut Bank (Mont.) High. Vermulm was a three-time place-winner at the Class B/C meet.

Yates, a two-time place-winner, and Bryan Shaffer of Columbia Falls (Mont.) High, a two-time placer and state runner-up as a senior, join the program at 149 pounds.

Justin Meier from Absarokee (Mont.) High joins the program at 157 pounds after a high school career that included three medals, and Jacob Wharton of Lathrop (Fairbanks, Alaska) High will wrestle at 174 pounds following a high school career in which he won four medals.

At 184 pounds the Argos signed Jesse Ramos of Cimarron (Las Vegas, Nev.) High, a fourth-place finisher in 2014, and Justin Harbinson of Missoula (Mont.) Sentinel High, who was the state runner-up as a senior.

Tom Harvey of Mount Spokane (Wash.) High and Tristian Baus of Snohomish (Wash.) High join the program at 197 pounds. Harvey was a two-time state place-winner and the state runner-up as a senior, while Baus finished third as a senior.

At heavyweight the Argonauts added two-time Montana Class AA state champion Jaydn Wilson of Missoula Sentinel, and Alexis Garcia of Mountain View (Mesa, Ariz.) High, who placed as a senior.

Also joining the program at 141 pounds is Idaho State transfer Wyatt Bedke (Rupert, Idaho), who was a two-time state place-winner in high school.

Chicago native Michael Ayala (174 pounds) joins the program after a two-year career at Southwest Community College where he was a two-time junior college national qualifier.

Ayala’s junior college teammate Kolbjorn Skaflestad also joins the program. The Hoonah, Alaska, native was a two-time junior college All-American.

“This should be a great recruiting class to build on for the future of the Argo wrestling team,” Schaeffer said.
