Carroll Men's Soccer Signs Four

Posted: Updated:
Carroll College head men’s soccer coach Doug Mello has announced the singings of four student-athletes, Jose Mena (Costa Rica), Nate Miller (Ridgefield, Wash), Dylan Vazquez (Portland, Ore.) and John Husar (Sheridan Community College, Wyo.) who will join the first-year program next month.

Mena helped his Futeca (Guatemala) club team win the Mayor’s Cup in Las Vegas this past February, which included over 200 teams.

“Jose is a very talented player, he will probably play outside midfield or forward, he had more than a goal per match during the summer, we expect big things out of him as a leader and goal scorer,” Mello said.

Additionally, Jose’s club placed third in three consecutive Surf Cups (San Diego) as the native Costa Rican attended Colegio Internacional de Guatemala for high school.

“Since the first time I met Coach Mello, I felt that we had the same passion and respect for soccer. I´m proud to be part of Coach Mello’s soccer team,” Mena said.

Nate Miller joins the new Carroll College program from Ridgefield High School where he was voted team MVP and was an All-Conference selection for his Ridgefield squad that captured conference, sectional and district championships in 2013.

Miller was a three-year starter and was named all-conference in all three seasons.  Miller is a member of the Washington Timbers FC club team and has had an outstanding summer.

“Nate is an important addition to our forward line, he possesses a quick release on his shot and is an accurate passer. His speed and pace puts defenders under siege. We look for him to be a terror around the goal,” Mello said.

Dylan Vazquez of Sunset High School in Portland joins the Fighting Saints.  Vazquez was a standout on the soccer pitch and in the classroom as the four-time scholar athlete maintained a 3.96 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society.

“Dylan is a strong defender he brings great versatility to our team, he is strong in the air and possesses great feet.  We’re looking for him to help stop our opponent and initiate our attack,” Mello said.

In addition to his academic success, Vazquez was a key member of the Sunset team that finished second in the Metro League in 2013.  His club teams captured championships last season in the Beaverton Cup and Lake Oswego Cup.

“Having the opportunity to learn from a veteran coach like Mello with an outstanding history with new soccer programs convinced me Carroll would be a great choice of schools to play for,” Vazquez said.

John Husar a striker from Sheridan Community College comes to Helena after two seasons at Sheridan CC.  Husar was selected as a captain in 2013 and was a member of the National Junior College Association of America National Tournament Team in 2012.

“As a defender, we’re expecting John to bring stability as an upperclassmen.  He is a good possessor of the ball and is a good man-to-man marker, we’re excited to have him aboard,” Mello said.

Husar, originally from Billings West High School, played on the 2012 Montana State Champion Club Team and played three seasons of Olympic Development Soccer.

“I want to help set the standard high for this team, being a first year program, everyone expects us to be timid and not a threat, I want to prove them wrong,” Husar said.
