Helena Wine shop offers tastes from around the world

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -

A recently opened wine shop brings tastes from around the world to Helena. At Martin's Wines, not will you be able to purchase maybe you next favorite bottle of wine....but you'll also get a taste of history.

"There's like 16,000 varieties of grapes out there, and we typically only know about six in our country alone. We bring in grapes and wines from other countries. We just tasted one from Greece that is amazing," Co-owner of Martin's Wines Steven Aagenes.

Co-Owner of Martin's Wines Martin Richard said, "This wine is grown in this volcanic soil, and it has this mineral quality that a lot people attribute to that soil. So, when you're tasting this wine you're tasting the volcano. you are actually tasting a bit of cataclysmic history right here."

But Martin and Steven won't choose just any wine

"We screen everything that's on the shelves. We won't put it out unless we've tried it and find out that it's good," Steven said.

About 100 bottles sit on their shelve, but they offer more than just wine...Steven and Martin are also in the business of making people of all ages happy.

"I make them happy by selling wine, but when kids come inhere, I'll make them happy by talking about the puffer fish," Martin said. "If someone comes by with their dog, I'll try to make friends with that dog. Wine is what we support making people happy with, but still it's making people happy."

Work from local artists are hung on the wall, including some photography work of Steven's son Liam.

"Yeah he's actually sold three pictures out of here. He gets excited. He'll ask once in a while, 'have you sold anymore pictures??'" Steven said.

Martin said aside from finding a wine you like, it's the memories that surround the bottle that are most important.

"Wine among friends spreads friendship" Martin said. "And that's what we try to teach people to do, is to spread friendship, to share those experiences."

Martin's Wine's offers wine club every month where learn about what different flavors they have and expand your wine tastes.

HELENA, Mont.- Vandalism is running rampant throughout the Helena Walking Mall. So far, 25 different spots have been hit, including a piece of history. The yellow, 1800s era trolly car is one of the most notable victims. The graffiti first made its appearance on Friday. The vandal has continued to add to the mess since then.
