Carroll College and Helena PD Host Active Shooter Drill

HELENA -

Carroll College and the Helena Police Department teamed up today for an active shooter drill.

This is the first active shooter drill held at Carroll. The goal of the training was to prepare faculty, staff and Helena police officers if there's ever an active shooter on campus.

Chair of the Carroll risk management committee, Lori Peterson said, "I believe it was in 1988 we did have a shooting shooting, so we are not immune to the situation."

"On average they kill someone every 15 seconds," Sgt. Jeff Wilson said. "So, every 15 seconds that you are able to keep them away from you is one more life saved."

Wilson explained in the informational session prior to the drill that a fire extinguisher is a great weapon to use against an active shooter. But the first and most important thing to do is try to safely get yourself out of the building. Carroll college plans to make the active shooter drill an annual training event.
