Montana State Volleyball Turning Youth Into Experience

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN - It's all smiles as the Bobcat's volleyball team returns to the court. Like last year the team is extremely young with a handful of freshman and a large group of returning sophomores.

"I think one of the best things about the team is with having so many freshmen last year, they're not freshmen any more," said head coach Kyle Weindel. "We now have a year of experience with a lot of our point scorers. Now a majority of our team, although they're still underclassmen, are sophomores and juniors."

Just two seniors return to a team that finished 6-25 last year. Those being Zoe Gogan and Kasey Schlatter.

"Kasey Schlatter and Zoe Gogan in these first three days have done a great job in being our lone two seniors of taking everybody under their wing, so to speak, and making sure people are doing what they're supposed to do," said Weindel.

"I've kind of always took it upon myself to be a leader, to bring people up with me," said senior libero Kasey Schlatter. "With there being so few upperclassmen, I think it's everyone's job to kind of step up and step in to that leadership role."

A total of eight players return to the team, four of which were starters a year ago. And like last year the team says the youth will need to step up in order to be successful.

"I think everyone is going to step and contribute in some way," said sophomore outside hitter Kennadie Clute. Depending on who is going to play and at what position, I think it will be based on who plays the hardest. I think they are going to help us a lot. I think we're going to need them to contribute, and I think we're going to have a good year."

The cats will play four tournaments before the conference season. They will head to Utah, Washington, New Mexico, and Tennessee.
