HAVRE - Montana State University-Northern announced today that its head football coach, Mark Samson, has resigned.  Northern has appointed Jake Eldridge who has served as defensive coordinator as the interim head coach for the upcoming football season.  A national search for a new head coach will begin as soon as possible and the university will be seeking significant community input and involvement.

Samson began coaching for Northern in 2004 and had an overall 45-60 record.

“We thank Coach Samson for his service and wish him all the best on his next endeavor,” said MSU-Northern Athletic Director, Christian Oberquell.  Coach Samson said, “I would like to thank the players, current and past, staff, the loyal Northern fans and the parents for all of the support they have provided me throughout my years as coach.  I wish the team and Coach Eldridge the best of luck in the upcoming season.”

“We are pleased that Jake Eldridge has agreed to step into the role as interim head football coach.  Jake has the skills necessary to carry the Lights' football team to a successful season,” Oberquell said.  He further added that the coaching staff currently in place will remain throughout this season.

This will be Eldridge's sixth season with the Lights coaching staff, serving for the past three years as defensive coordinator and previously as the head of the Lights strength and conditioning program.

Eldridge, a Helena native, was part of the Helena Capital High School football team that won the State Championship in 2000. He was a two-sport standout in both track and football earning All-State and All-Conference honors throughout his career.  Eldridge earned dual track and football scholarships to the University of Mary.  He then transferred to MSU-Northern in 2004. Eldridge was a four-year starter for the Lights as well as a four-year captain and defensive back where he garnered many All Conference and Academic honors.
