Saints Volleyball Looking to Reach New Heights

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - There are certain things in sports you just can't teach. One of them is height, and the Carroll Saints Volleyball team certainly has plenty of it.

"It's exciting," said senior middle hitter Calli Prestwood. "It's fun to be able to hit against a big block on the other side. I think it's really good training for both the hitters and the defense to be hitting against that everyday in practice."

"I think our blocking is great right now," said senior outside hitter Kathleen Mulligan. "That'll be a big thing for our defense, just so that we can have the confidence to know that the block is going to get there. So I think it's great."

Having a height advantage on the court can create tons of scoring opportunities for the Saints this season, but it's their relationship off the court that has head coach Moe Boyle excited.

"Our height is certainly going to be an advantage," said Boyle. "But I really think the maturity, girls that have been playing for a couple of years, and their maturity level as they go through the program, I think that's going to be our strength."

"It's been awesome having the same senior class for the last four years," said Prestwood. "We're a really tight group and we know how to work together. We know what to say, what not to say to each other, and how each other acts on the court. So we can teach the underclassmen what it's like to be a team and be there for each other."

Also returning for the Saints is All Conference first team outside hitter, Kathleen Mulligan. And for the Saints to be successful in 2014 they'll not only need her to match her performance, but improve upon it.

"As an outside hitter she's going to get the majority of sets," said Boyle. "And you count on her to put them away. She has a tremendous jump, and I think the setters really rely on her. So it's going to be like the last three years where she's going to get a lot and we're going to put a lot on her shoulders."

With experienced players like Mulligan in the fold, the Saints will be reaching for new heights in 2014.And with their actual height, that shouldn't be too hard.
