Saints Men Drop Season Opener on Road

Michael Porter scored the earliest goal in team history to start a three-goal game and lead the Westminster men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Carroll (Mont.) in the team's season opener at Dumke Field on Thursday afternoon.

Porter scored the game's first goal just 1:15 into the action when he took a cross from Andrew Clayton and put it into the net from eight yards away for his first-career goal. It came 36 seconds earlier than the previous record goal in a category that was started in 2006.

Porter and Clayton would team-up again just over two minutes later on a replica of the first goal. After Clayton played the ball into the penalty area, Porter fired a shot off the crossbar and then in for the 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the action.

Carroll (0-1, 0-1 Frontier) was playing its first-ever game in their inaugural season. They found an answer in the 11th minute as Dylan Allen collected possession in the penalty area and fired a shot inside the left post for the first goal in the history of the program.

After leading 2-1 at intermission, the Griffins (1-0, 1-0) notched a goal from Manuel Duenas just 31 seconds into the second half. Clayton match a school record with his third assist of the game on the play when he played the ball into the area for Duenas to finish inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

Porter would cap the fifth hat-trick by a Griffin since 2005 in the 68th minute after a blocked shot from Connor Thompson bounced to his feet. Porter placed his shot inside the left post to cap the day's scoring.

Westminster dominated possession throughout the afternoon and finished with a 16-3 edge in shot attempts. The Griffins put eight of their attempts on goal and also attempted five corner kicks.

Logan Butzier earned his 10th-career victory in goal for Westminster.

The Griffins will continue play in the Westminster Kickoff Classic on Friday when they face Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 4:30 p.m. MT at Dumke Field.
