Byland’s header lifts Argos past The Master’s College

Jordan Byland left Montana with a mullet, but he'll be returning to the Treasure State with a more conventional haircut.
Byland promised to sport the mullet until he scored a goal this season. It only took two games as the Missoula native's header off a corner kick lifted the University of Great Falls men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over The Master's College at Dumke Field Thursday in the Westminster Kickoff Classic.

“It was just a really good ball and there wasn't anyone marking me,” Byland said. “I looked up, I attacked it and buried it.”
Byland's goal came in the 43rd minute when Anderson Cardoso's corner kick found the UGF junior all alone in the box.
“It was a great ball in from Anderson, and a good job by Jordan getting up and wanting it more than the defender,” UGF coach Paul Zazenski said. “That's sometimes all it takes.”

Byland's goal provided a positive conclusion to what was a sluggish first half for the Argonauts (2-0). UGF managed six other first-half shots before Byland finished.

“I think the heat might have played a factor, and overall the mentality wasn't where it needed to be,” Zazenski said. “We've got to step out on the field and have the mentality to play a 90-minute game against a high-level opponent on a consistent basis.”

Zazenski was pleased with the effort in the second half as the Argos held TMC to three second-half shots and five for the game.
UGF goalkeeper Jose Pena recorded the shutout. That he tallied just one save was a testament to the performance of the Argos' defense.

“I want to give a lot of credit to our defense and our midfield,” Byland said. “The back line held up great to keep the shutout intact.”
The Argos have Friday off before taking on Bethesda University of California Saturday at 11:30 a.m. UGF concludes the Classic with a 10 a.m. contest against Embry-Riddle of Arizona.
