Great Falls Animal Shelter Running Out of Space

Posted: Updated:
I spent sometime at the shelter today and their situation is pretty dire, you can barely turn the corner with out seeing a cat or dog housed in the corner, they are using every square inch of the building and doing the best they can with their resources to make a difference take a look.

Meet Rex a plot hound mix, that was illegally left abandoned outside at the Great Falls Animal Shelter.

"When we got to work Monday morning we found him in here,"said Laura Mcelhinney, Volunteer Coordinator.

He was left with out food and water nor do they know how long he was outside.

“Who knows what could have happened to him, what if we didn't see him in here, what if the weather turned bad,” said Mcelhinney.

Adding to the growing list of problems animals aren't being adopted fast enough .Taking up all of the kennel space especially cats. For every one cat that gets adopted 3 to 4 times as many come in on a daily basis.

“People just let them go they are not spaying and neutering the animals and cats can reproduce very very quickly,”said Mcelhinney.

Too many cats at the shelter has forced them to use dog crates to house cats in the front lobby.

“We have cats up here for one reason just to make more space there is just not enough space in the back and it just helps highlight a few of them as well,” said Mcelhinney.

The city budget provides just enough money to keep the lights on and pay salaries and not much else.

“We do not have the funds to get the animals prepared for the adoption,”said Mcelhinney

As a solution to the problem all of the animals are half off for adoption in august, to speed up adoptions to make room for incoming animals. The shelter is also trying raise over 100,000 dollars to start a building  expansion project so cats and Rex can have a temporary home until adopted.

As we remember those who have served our country, we take a look at one Montanan who followed her passion, heritage, and broke boundaries in her service to this country. She is a huge part of our history here in the Treasure State.
