Bengals, Bruins Volleyball Searching for Leaders in 2014

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - The Helena High Bengals begin their volleyball season this Saturday at 1:30 vs Billings West. After riding a loaded senior class all the way to third place in the state tournament last year this year's Bengals are searching for new leaders. They only have three seniors this year, but their strength will be their depth."Last year we had such strong leaders that graduated," said Bengals senior Jenna Starke. "So it's a lot of me stepping up and my other seniors, Tyler and Maddie, them all stepping up. It's just a new experience. I have to kind of teach myself even though I've been with the program for four years."

"Right now our strength is that we have multiple people doing a job," said Bengals head coach Tiffany Hofer. "We don't just have that one go to person. We have kids in different positions that when you need to call on them they're there and ready."

Across town at Capital, they have plenty of similarities to their rival Bengals. They lost a pair of all staters last year in Michaela Dowdy and Elise Mathis, and also only have three seniors on their team. With tons of new faces on the front and back lines the Bruins already have a strategy for this year's squad to keep opponents on their toes.

"We've started putting in new plays, and we've just started from scratch a whole lot with new hitters and everyone is pretty much new," said Bruins senior Rayna Pilgeram.

"We're very versatile. I've got girls that can play lots of different positions," added Bruins head coach Hollee Goody. "So we're really working on being unpredictable, and kind of running some things, some fun offenses, and just using our athleticism to get ahead and try to do some things. Because we are very athletic."

The Bruins start their season at home at 1:30 when they host Billings Skyview.
