Tri-City Americans Pick up First Pre-Season Win at Everett Tournament

Everett, WA – The Tri-City Americans won their first game of the preseason on Sunday, scoring three goals in the third period to come from behind to defeat the Victoria Royals, 3-1, in the Americans final game of the Everett Preseason Tournament at Comcast Arena.

 

Tri-City outshot Victoria in the first period, 9-8. The Royals had four power plays in the first period while the Americans had two, but neither team was able to score heading into the second period.

 

The scoreless tie was broken in the second period, with Victoria's Ryan Peckford scoring seven minutes into the period to put the Royals up 1-0. Victoria outshot Tri-City 11-7, and carried the one goal advantage into the third period.  


The Americans got back into the game early in the third period, as Jordan Topping scored his first goal in an Americans' jersey, tying the game three minutes into the third period. Tri-City took the lead midway through the period on a Jackson Playfair goal to give the Americans its first lead of the preseason. Victoria tried to get the tying goal and outshot Tri-City 12-10 in the third, but the Americans held on and capped off the victory with an empty net goal by Justin Marreck with one second left in the game, giving the Americans its first win of the preseason.   

Victoria had the advantage in the shots department, 31-26. The Americans were regulars in the penalty box, racking up 22 penalty minutes compared to Victoria's eight penalty minutes. Victoria was unable to take advantage of any of its 10 power play opportunities, while the Americans were 0-for-3 on the power play. 


Victoria's Michael Herringer stopped 23 shots, and Eric Comrie earned the win for the Americans in net, stopping 30-of-31 shots.

 

Tri-City will travel home to get ready to host the 2014 Red Lion Hotels Preseason Tournament starting next Thursday, Sept. 4, with two games that day, including the Americans facing the Kootenay Ice. The Americans will face the Red Deer Rebels on Friday, Sept. 5, and take on the rival Spokane Chiefs on Saturday, Sept. 6. All Americans games in the tournament are at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or contact the Americans office for tournament packages.
