Highwood-Geraldine Unbeaten, Prepares for Title Game Rematch

Posted: Updated:
The Highwood/Gerladine Rivals do what they do. They win football games. After going undefeated and winning a state championship last year, they've started the season on pace to do it again.

"Season's going good. It's an interesting start to the year, starting in conference. So you're starting with teams that you know more about and it's an opportunity to play teams you're familiar with right off the season. But we've adjusted well and are happy with where we're at and are getting better each day," said Rivals coach, Brandon Gondeiro.

The Rivals haven't lost a game since the state semi-finals in 2012 but before this season even started, they lost their senior quarterback, Darren Malek.

Darren's back with the scar marks. He had surgery over the summer and should be back within a few weeks.

"It's really exciting for me. I've been anticipating it for quite a while. I'm just excited that all my work going through PT and starting the running now is starting to pay off and will hopefully all come through with a strong recovery," said Rivals senior QB Darren Malek.

The Rivals won't have Malek this Saturday for a rematch of last year's state championship game against the Denton-Stanford-Geyser Bearcats but are excited and know it's going to be a tough game.

"It's going to be a tussle and whoever gets this one kind of gets the upper-hand in the rest of the season race. We're going to have to come out and play 4 quarters of our best football if we're going to be on the field at the end of the game with them," said Gondeiro.

"We're pretty pumped. They're definitely going to come at us with everything they got because we beat them twice last year. They're a good team and a few guys that we have to watch but we just have to come out and play our game," said Rivals senior, Jordan LaFontaine.

The Rivals are sure to be tested this Saturday but they've proven over time that they can win games. And they'll be looking to keep it that way for the rest of the season.
