Remember Dakota Kimbrough: The One Year Anniversary

Posted: Updated:
TOWNSEND - It's hard to believe that this Saturday marks a year since the tragic passing of former Townsend student Dakota Kimbrough. Dakota was not only a star athlete for the Bulldogs, but an exceptional person.

"Sometimes I think he's just another senior that left," said Bulldogs senior lineman Evander Wilbur. "But he's not."

The Townsend football team has carried his jersey onto the field. They've put decals on their helmets. And in next week they'll retire Dakota Kimbrough's jersey.

"Like we had talked about last season, as of homecoming night his jersey will be retired in the concession stand," said Townsend head coach Travis Rauh.

Retiring his jersey is a symbol for the Bulldogs football team. Not of how great of a player Kimbrough was, but of how good of a teammate he was.

"He was a top tier athlete," said Wilbur. "But he wasn't so far away that I couldn't connect with him."

"He was one of the most enjoyable kids I've ever coached," said Rauh. "He had one of those personalities that everyone enjoyed being around. He was a very coachable young man. He worked very hard, and just had a great sense of humor."

"He'd come down and he'd be with us and we were jacked that Dakota, this superstar athlete would talk to us," said Wilbur. "Now us upperclassman, I like to think to take time to talk to our freshmen too. I think that just left an imprint on us and we want to do it too."

"He was liked by kids from every single class," said Rauh. "Because he would have friends in his class, but he looked after the underclassmen and encouraged them to do well. Joked around with them and made them feel important too."

As I mentioned before, next Friday night, when the Bulldogs host Manhattan, Dakota's jersey will be retired. And homecoming just so happens to fall on September 26th. The same number as Dakota Kimbrough wore for the Bulldogs.
