Senior Standout: Jefferson's Reilly Leary

Posted: Updated:

There may not be a more sure tackler in the state than Jefferson's Reilly Leary.

"He's one of the best fundamental tacklers I've ever coached," said Jefferson head coach Clint Layng. "He doesn't miss tackles."

"It's really important because if you don't have someone like that it's going to be six every play," said Jefferson junior linebacker Trase LeTexier.

"One missed tackle can mean the game," said Leary. "So it goes back to going hard all the time."

It's Reilly's consistency that makes him so easy for his coaches and teammates to trust him. But also it's what kind of person he is off the field.

"Riley is the guy that comes into school in the morning and says hi to every single person," said LeTexier. "He tries to make conversation with you and get to know you."

"He's a good kid," said Layng. "Very coachable, tough kid. He's fun to be around, has a good sense of humor. Just a great kid."

"Off the field I like to hang out with friends mostly," said Leary. "I like to hang out with family and do family things. I'm a big family guy."

Part of that family for Reilly is the Jefferson football team. As one of the most friendly members of the team, his leadership skills are unmatched.

"He picks everybody up," said LeTexier. "He tries to show you what's right to do on the field and what's right to do off the field. He's just a great friend."

"Last year we did pretty good," said Leary. "But we didn't get to where we wanted to be. So we're really trying to push to the new, younger kids that where we want to be is a state champion, which our school's never been."

As you heard, Reilly's goal this season is to tackle the first state title in Jefferson history. And if history has shown us anything, it's that when Reilly sets his sights on something he usually takes it down.
