The Carroll College Saints defeated rival Montana Tech 3-1 in a tightly contested Frontier Conference match, Wednesday night at the PE Center in Helena.

The win moves Carroll to 12-7 overall and 5-1 in Frontier Conference play.  Montana Tech falls to 7-9 and 2-2 in conference.

The Saints won the first set 25-21. The hit .241 and held the Orediggers to a .086 percentage.

In the second set, the Saints and Diggers battled form the first serve to the last. The Diggers held a 26-25 advantage before the Saint won three-straight points to claim the set 28-26.

The Saints began the week with a lineup change. They moved freshman Molly Morehouse into the starting lineup and head coach Moe Boyle doesen't think her team has fully adjusted to the new rotation.

“Tech is an extremely scrappy,” Boyle said. “A lot of balls that would have gone to floor against other teams just didn't against tech. You are constantly on defense but we changed the lineup this week and we just aren't totally comfortable yet.”

The Saints trailed by seven points in the third set but came back to take a 23-22 lead. This time it was Montana Tech's turn to win the last three points.

The two teams had an identical .188 hitting percentage in the third frame but the Saints stepped on the gas pedal in the fourth.

“I think the energy changed from game three to game four,” Boyle said. “We went point-for-point with them for most of the match but we came alive in the fourth set and it was spurred by some great blocking.”

Carroll came out on fire and never looked back en route to a 25-19 win to close out the match.

Sarah Roshak and Calli Prestwood led the Saints with 12 kills apiece and Kathleen Mulligan added 11 kills on just 22 attacks.

Paige Montgomery was also impressive with 12 block assists and a solo block.
