Regular Voting Registration Period Ends, & Absentee Voting Begins

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -

Secretary of State Linda McCulloch is reminding Montanans the regular registration period to vote ends Monday at 5 p.m. and absentee voting begins.

If you miss the regular registration deadline---fear not because you can still sign up for late registration and vote by mail, but you must register in person at your county election office.

On Monday at 8 a.m. the Lewis and Clark County elections office will open for voters to sign up for late registration as well as sign up for an absentee ballot. If you choose to vote absentee, the elections office will have voting booths set up. So, you can register and vote all in the same day.

Elections Supervisor Audrey Dufrechou said, "If you're registering to vote you'll need you Montana state ID or driver's license number. You don't actually have to have the card as long as you know the number if you don't have one of those we can take the last four digits of your social security number."

It's really not uncommon for voters to register late. In fact, the Lewis and Clark County elections office says they've made adjustments to get you through the registration line quicker.

"Before you had to fill out two separate applications when you late registered," Dufrechou said. "We've reduced it to one in our office, and we've improved our traffic flow so it's easier for people to get in voting and get out without creating long lines."

The Secretary of States office recorded over 1,300 late registration voters for the 2012 general election. As for this year's primary election, over 200 voters registered late, and these numbers include those who registered on election day.

Voters are also encouraged to confirm their voting status on the my voter page app or online.

"It's really important this year because we had redistricting at the beginning of the year so our precinct boundaries have changed, our polling places have changed for a lot of voters," Dufrechou said.

McCulloch said the app tells voters whether their an absentee voter or a polling place voter, where their polling place is, and track to make sure the county has sent them their absentee ballot.

In addition to absentee ballots, McCulloch said Montanans will also receive their 2014 voter information packet in the mail as well.
