Argos Move to 2-0 Under Owens

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Great Falls men's basketball team topped Alberta-Augustana 86-57 Sunday at the McLaughlin Center.

The Argonauts remained unbeaten with a victory that was far less contested than Saturday's 72-66 victory over the same Vikings team in the season opener.

“We knocked down shots – that was one thing,” UGF head coach Anthony Owens said. “I didn't think we had as much defensive intensity last night. I thought we were kind of passive and not aggressive like we've been preaching.”

Marcus Hurn led all scorers with 26 points – all but two of them in the first half on 10 of 11 shooting from the field. Steven Daho scored 10, while Dalton Groenewold, Matthew Hurn and Daniel Arcau all had nine.

“I don't tell those guys not to shoot the basketball – even when they're in slumps,” Owens said. “I encourage them to keep shooting. You just have to be smart with the shots you take.”

Mike Malin scored 11 points and Anton Paszek scored 10 to pace the Vikings.

TJ Harris had seven assists as the Argos led 55-36 at the half. UGF continued to pull away in the second half as it locked down defensively.

“Tonight I didn't think (Alberta-Augustana) had as many open shots,” Owens said. “It feels good. Now we have to regroup because we have two good teams coming in here next week.”

The Argos continue nonconference play next Friday and Saturday. UGF plays host to Northwest Indian College at 2 p.m. Friday, and Lethbridge at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Both games are at the McLaughlin Center.
