Saints Women's Basketball Relying on Depth, Size This Season

HELENA - The Carroll Saints women's basketball team comes into this season with the one thing you can never have enough of: depth.

"You can't just stop one person this year," said Saints junior guard Katie Estey. "You have to stop all of us. And if one person has an off night we have someone coming in ready to go."

"We're not going to be just giving people rest minutes," said Saints head coach Rachelle Sayers. "We're going to come in and I feel like our bench is going to continue to push us as hard as they can push, and we're not going to lose anything when we go to our bench."

The Saints depth isn't the only new thing this season either. They have installed a new offense! One that will force players to read the defense and react.

"It is a work in progress," said Sayers. "As a coach it's a little bit difficult because you give up a lot of control. You don't control who gets the shots. You don't control where the shots come from. So you put a lot of trust and faith in your team."

"We have a lot more threats, especially in the paint," said Saints senior guard Kalee Junkermier. "We have Cassidy Hashley, who's going to be big for us, Baylee Watson, she's going to be huge, and Jordan Johnston. They're all going to be really big for us."

With a wealth of bigs in the post, the Saints will also be looking for senior guard Kalee Junkermier to build on her 9.4 points per game from last season so that defenses can't key in on their bigs.

"Her game has come to fruition this year," said Sayers. "The hard work and the time she's put in has paid off. She's playing well, she has a lot of confidence, and the team has confidence in her."

"Everyone needs that player on that player on their team, and she'll definitely step up and do that for us," said Estey. "But I think knowing that she has the team she does behind her is going to help her."

Though a lot of eyes will be on Junkermier and her fellow senior Bailey Snelling this season, the Saints can rest easy knowing that they have the right kind of depth to support them for a long tournament run..
