Helena's Aidan Reed Among Favorites in AA Cross Country

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - Helena High's Aidan Reed is a winner. Heading into state this weekend, he's won at six out of seven meets this year, but his secret to winning, isn't a secret at all.

"I'd say it's just a matter of handling discomfort," said Reed. "And then especially in racing along with handling discomfort, because that's present at every part of the race, adopting a race plan and executing it properly is paramount."

This will be Aidan's third consecutive year at state. Add that experience to the fact that this year's state meet will be held in his back yard in Helena, and the odds definitely point in Reed's favor.

"There are a lot places where people can sort of go to sleep or blow up," said Reed. "So for my teammates and I there are some strategic points that we've run at the 7 of 7 and then at cross town. So we know what to do and where to do it."

"Seeing it twice now in a row, and having a chance to see it for a third time, not having to travel or anything like that is a significant advantage," said Bengals boys cross country coach Kelley Gilbert.

After winning six of seven races this year, Aidan could really boost his stock by taking state. He's ranked 86th overall in the nation, and given that he still has his senior year ahead of him, could find himself vaulting up the standings with a state title.

"Nationally right now I'm certainly not in the top 50, so I'm hoping to move up nationally," said Reed. "But it's exciting. I feel fortunate to be one of the better runners in Montana right now."

While the best high school runners in the state of Montana will be on display this Saturday, it's no secret, Aidan Reed is as safe bet as any to take the AA crown, because all he seems to do is win.
