Football Unites Reid, Mike and Entire Nelson Family

Posted: Updated:

No matter what the calendar says, football is king inside the Nelson household.

"It's really the only season at my house - football season and waiting for football season - so it's pretty neat to do it as a family," said GFCC senior Reid Nelson.

I mean heck, Reid's sister's name is Peyton after Chicago Bears great Walter Payton and Reid's mom, Becky, created the shrine, a room downstairs dedicated to football and the 10 state championship teams Mike Nelson coached when he was at Highwood.

But it's who he's been able to coach the last few years at Great Falls Central Catholic that has meant as much as any state title could.

"You know I'm pretty lucky. Most dads don't get to spend hours a day with their kid. I'm pretty fortunate and hopefully Reid feels the same way," said GFCC head coach Mike Nelson.

Reid certainly does. He's dreamt about it since he was a kid.

"When I was 5,6,7,8 years old I would always be at his practices and watch him coach. And you think about that as a kid - playing for your dad. Then when he went into pharmaceuticals it wasn't going to happen but then when the opportunity rose again it was definitely super cool to go from thinking about it as a kid to actually happen," said Reid.

And now that it has happened, Mike couldn't be more impressed by the dedication and work ethic his son has shown.

"Reid definitely got a lot faster and a lot stronger - that's been the biggest difference. He's religious in the weight room. I think the only workouts he's missed is when we've been on family vacation," said Mike.

Now, as the teams quarterback, safety and senior leader, Reid helped lead the Mustangs to the playoffs. So there's a chance to add to that shrine on the wall.

"Now that the opportunity is in front of us you got to take it one game at a time and hopefully we have an opportunity to do something like that," said Reid.

A state championship sure would be the perfect ending for Reid, Mike and the entire Nelson family. But regardless, Reid and Mike have become a solid 1-2 punch. Whether it's as coach and player, or as father and son.
