Argos Wrestling Ranked 3rd in Nation, Looking to Finish 1st

"Our goal is always to win a national title. We have to be top 5 in the country to do that and I think we're there,” said Caleb Schaeffer, Argos wrestling coach.

Not a lot of NAIA wrestling teams in the country have the ability to compete for that national title. But the Argos do because they have so many guys back from the team that almost won it last year.

“We have the same team. We graduated two guys off that roster. We have pretty much the same exact team so we're looking for bigger and better things this year,” said Schaeffer.

Like most powerhouse programs, a lot of UGF's success has come from recruiting top talent. The Argos just signed Utah prep state champion Nick Bingham on Monday. but it's the kids from Montana that have really stood out.

"You look at our roster and it's about 60 percent Montana and those are the guys where we've had success All-American wise. We need to keep landing the best kids out of Montana, protecting our borders and as long as we're doing that we'll be a top 5 team in the country," said Schaeffer.

UGF isn't the only one that can lay claim to that. Argos rival, MSU-Northern, has some home grown talent too and are ranked 5th in the country. The two teams will face off Thursdayy in Havre in a top 5 showdown.

"It's a big rivalry every year. We've been coming off a loss to Northern in the last dual. We took 2nd at nationals and they took 3rd. It's always tough so we're just going to go out there and put it all on the line every time," said Shawn Lau, senior 165 pound weight class.

"For some reason against them in a dual they always seem to have our number and hopefully we'll come away with a win up there, said Schaeffer.

The ultimate goal for UGF is to be the best in the country. But first, on Thursday, the Argos will have to prove their best team from the Treasure State.
