Saints Seniors Eager for Chance at National Title

Posted: Updated:

This year's senior class has earned plenty of accolades for their outstanding play, but there's one accomplishment that has eluded them all.

"How important is it to get that title to end off with Carroll?"

"Honestly, my career won't mean anything if I don't."

Carroll linebacker Sean Blomquist is not alone in his desire to bring the Saints their seventh national title.

"As a senior class, that's been our goal," said Saints senior receiver Anthony Clarke. "Ever since we came here we want to be a part of that elite group that can say we won a title too."

"For most of us this is our last chance of playing football," said Saints senior running back Dustin Rinker. "We want to go as far as we can. It is a big deal. We want to go as deep as we can and play for each other."

This class has certainly shown what they are made of. Rebuilding a program that missed the post-season in 2012, then this year, leading the team back from a season opening loss at Southern Oregon.

"It was a long bus ride home from Southern Oregon that first week," said Saints head coach Mike Van Diest. "When we lost, and you're on the bus for 17 hours you've got a lot of time to think about it. But this senior class never wavered a bit. After our meetings on Sunday that day they came out on Monday, and you never would have guessed that we just took a long trip and lost."

It's been nothing but wins since then, nine straight. And now as the top overall seed winning that elusive national title is still in their grasp.

"I came to Carroll to win national championships," said Blomquist. "And I know it's too early to talk about that, we're taking it one week at a time, but everyone knows that's the overall goal."

As freshman, they played for a title in 2011. As seniors, they are planning to do it again this year.
