Saints Open Playoffs Ready for High Flying Valley City State

HELENA - After weeks of avoiding the word, it's finally time to talk playoffs. Tomorrow the top ranked Carroll Saints will begin what they hope is a long run in the postseason when they host the North Star conference champions Valley City State.

"Offensively this is one of the best teams we're going to see," said Saints head coach Mike Van Diest. "They've got one of the best tight ends we'll see this year."

That tight end for the Vikings is junior Jake Miller, who's five touchdowns rank third on the team. He's one of a number of weapons Valley City State has on offense, headlined by their electrifying freshman Antoine Griffin, who's 14 receiving touchdowns led the conference.

"Whenever you put up numbers like that anyone is going to look at it on paper and go 'woah,'" said Saints senior linebacker Sean Blomquist. "A true freshman, or red shirt freshman, nonetheless he's putting up phenomenal numbers."

"I hope we can tackle him," said Van Diest. "I hope we can jam him at the line of scrimmage. We're not into double teaming guys very much because you've got to worry about everybody. But he's very quick and the quarterback gets him the ball to him on time."

On defense arguably one of the top defenders for the Vikings is defensive lineman Darius Graves, who leads the team with 7 sacks, which is pretty impressive given his situation.

"He doesn't even start," said Van Diest. "He's their leading sack guy and he comes off the bench. He's not the biggest guy, but he's probably the fastest guy off the edge."

"You can tell that he does a good job in the film room as well as on the practice field," said Saints senior receiver Anthony Clarke. "Just making sure he's sound with what he needs to do and being prepared."

Outside of the three we just mentioned, one of the other guys Carroll has their eye on is Vikings sophomore QB Kurtis Walls. Walls threw for 36 touchdowns this season and Van Diest has been impressed with his accuracy under pressure. Game time is set for noon  here at Nelson Stadium.
