3 missing after fishing trip to Montana lake

Posted: Updated:

KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) - Law enforcement officers in northern Montana are searching a lake for three people who were reported missing when they failed to return from a weekend fishing trip.

The Glacier County sheriff's office, Blackfeet Tribal law enforcement and other agencies are searching for two Canadian men and a Japanese woman after family members contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sunday to report they hadn't returned from a fishing trip to Montana.

Officers found their pickup truck at Mission Lake, south of U.S. Highway 2 between Browning and Cut Bank.

The sheriff's office says evidence at the scene indicates they may have fallen into the lake on Saturday.

The names of the missing are: 75-year-old Fuki Nishibayashi (FOO'-kee nish-uh-BY'-ashee) of Japan; 56-year-old Danny Heland of Canada and 63-year-old Kazuhiko Hayashizaki (kah-zoo-HEE'-koh hay-YAH'-shee-zah-kee), also of Canada.

UPDATE

The Glacier County Sheriff's Office commenced the search for three missing fishermen, two males and one female, early this morning. The GCSO has requested and received mutual aid assistance from the Flathead County Sheriff Dive Team. The FCSO Dive Team commenced operations this morning and has continued throughout the day with the use of side scan sonar and multiple cold water divers.

During the search Deputies were able to recover one body from the lake. That person has been identified as one of the missing fisherman: 63 y/o Kazuhiko Hayashizaki. The search is continuing for the other two missing persons. At this time evidence suggests the three fishermen went through the ice or were blown to open water late morning on Saturday, November 22nd. The search has transitioned from a rescue to a recovery effort.

Due to hours of darkness and increasing winds in the area, the search has been suspended until morning.
