Griz Set for First Round Game Against San Diego

Posted: Updated:

One of the beauties of the FCS playoffs is schools often get to play against teams their unfamiliar with. That's the case when the Griz take on the San Diego Toreros who play in the Pioneer League Conference.

"I have never heard of them before leading into this week but they are a 9-2 team, they have won 9 games and have some good players it's playoff football every team we are playing now is a good team," said Griz defense end Zack Wagenmann.

The Toreros will have to deal with a rejuvenated Griz offense that has found success on the ground with Jordan Johnson running the zone read in the last few games.

"We have been running a little different scheme as you have noticed in the last few weeks and we're really enjoying it and it's been showing up on film the last few weeks," said Griz Offensive Lineman Ben Weyer.

"By doing some zone read it has opened up some things and as Zack knows anytime you have to account for the quarterback it makes it tough and you have to play assignment football instead of just running to the ball," said Griz Head Coach Mick Delaney.

The Toreros run a zone read scheme as well much like the Cats did. They have a fast quarterback and Coach Delaney believes if they can get after him like they did to MSU they can be successful.

"We have to pressure him and get him off his mark just like we've had to do every week we do that and we will get some turnovers. My dream is we get out of this game at a plus twenty and I've never been on a team that is over a plus fifteen," said Delaney.

The Griz are currently plus sixteen in turnover differential which is by far best in the conference as Idaho State is plus ten, while Portland State is last at -12.
