New Players Stepping Up for Capital Title Defense

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - "Coach Almquist's dad used to always say it. Confidence is like underwear, you have to have it, you just don't have to show it. So that's how we go into every game."

That was Casey Ebelt, one of four new starters on the Capital Bruins Basketball team. Being the defending the state champs Capital has plenty to be confident about. But with Sean Mulcahy the only player with lots of state experience, this years group knows it has plenty to prove.

"I know I have to be a leader," said Mulcahy. "We've got a lot of young kids. Even though a lot of the juniors didn't get to play last year because we had such a stud senior crew, they know what they're doing and can be just as big of a leader as me."

"I feel confident," said Bruins senior guard Casey Ebelt. "I feel really prepared. I got to go against Keeley Larson, Kyle Nichol, Hunter Beto, and Kyle Harrington every day at practice last year and they made me so much better."

Mulcahy and Ebelt are two of six seniors on this year's squad, who are joined by a ton of players that were on JV last season. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Last year's JV Bruins went 19-1, proving that the only thing keeping them off Varsity was the talent ahead of them.

"It's important to have a culture of winning," said  Almquist. "And while it hasn't been on the varsity level, they have experienced winning at the sub varsity level, and we hope that translates."

"The juniors have the same look at things as we do," said Mulcahy. "We have to play as a team if we want to win, and they're going to do their job just like any of us are going to do our jobs."

The Bruins will be relying on a full team effort this season to make up their losses. To defend their crown it'll take a lot of confidence.. and just like their underwear, it might now show, but it's certainly there.
