Helena, Capital Wrestling Both Looking for Improvements in 2014

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - The Helena Bengals wrestling team is coming off a 2013 season that saw them finish seventh in the AA. The Bengals had three placers in last year's tournament, including 120 pound state champ Landon Bailey. This year the Bengals come in a bit younger than usual, but have a host of seniors that will be looking to improve upon last year's three state-placers. As for Bailey, he is preparing for the target on his back that comes with being a returning champion.

"It's definitely not getting easier at all," said Bailey. "It's another year of tough wrestling. There's people that come from every team that's gunning for you to take you out. But you've just got to put the hard work in and hope it goes your way."

"Right now to be honest I haven't really told Landon much of anything," said Bengals head coach John Burke. "Because he's busting his butt in practice. So as long as he does that he'll be just fine."

Last year was the first year of a youth movement for the Capital wrestling team, and this year they're hoping to cash in on that experience. The Bruins finished 12th at state last year, led by third place finishes from both junior Alan Schmidtz and freshman Seth Schroeck. Capital comes in with yet another young team in 2014, but with an extra year of experience behind them the Bruins are hoping to make some noise this year.

"We've got to work on learning how to grind matches out," said Bruins head coach Deac Hall. "Not just going out and expecting pins, or a pin or be pinned, all or nothing kind of deal."

"Picking up little things that I didn't pick up last year," said Bruins sophomore Seth Schroeck. "The younger kids coming in this year are picking things up a lot faster than most of the new kids that came in last year. So that will help a lot"
