Senior Standout: Sean Mulcahy, Capital High

Posted: Updated:

Last year's Capital Bruins boys basketball team was set entering the season. Having five seniors starting was supposed to be a huge advantage, until Jason Corne was hurt, forcing Sean Mulcahy to start most of the Bruins remaining games.

"The reason he was put in the spot he was last year is that we could all trust him," said Bruins head coach Guy Almquist. "We could all trust him to do the right thing, be in the right spot, and make the right play when needed."

Having been to each of the past two state title games, Sean brings the most experience of any of the current Bruins. And while he's working on becoming a leader, he's always been a good motivator.

"Sean takes the stress off of a lot of situations," says Bruins senior guard Casey Ebelt. "I don't know exactly what he says, but he just says those silly little dumb quotes that it's like how do you think of that?"

"Say one of my buddies airballs a shot I'll go up to him and tell him 'Nice shot man. That was a really great shot'," said Mulcahy.

"If you're in the locker room, and there might be a moment where everyone is a little tense, or things haven't gone that well, there's just something that he can say," said Almquist. "I can't give you a specific but he'll just say something and all of us will break out in laughter."

We actually caught up with Sean earlier this summer, and caught a glimpse of just how funny he can be. During the Helena 3 on 3 Summer Slam basketball tournament Sean and his buddies sun burnt six pack abs into their skins to prove their originality.

"You can still see it, and it's been about four months," said Mulcahy. "It was pretty painful. I usually don't get sunburnt, it was like the second time in my life I've ever gotten sunburnt."

Sean's postseason experience makes him an obvious choice as the leader of this year's Bruins. And for Capital to make it to its third straight title game, he'll need to be a leader on and off the court.
