Fairfield Girls Begin Drive for Five

Posted: Updated:

Everybody knows about Fairfield girls basketball. And if you play or coach for the Eagles, you know the expectation.

"Fairfield's a tough town. I would say that everybody expects to play Saturday night. I think that's our goal. I don't know if that's the expectation for me yet but it's the back of my mind - i think that we could get there," said Fairfield head coach Dustin Gordon.

To defend their title yet again… the Eagles are going to have to overcome more than just the target on their back. Reigning Montana Gatorade Player of the Year Jill Barta... is now a Freshman at Gonzaga. And major contributors Kaylynn and Kourtney Coverdell are at Montana Tech. But coach Gordon has belief in his young team… that has just one senior… Great Falls High transfer Lizzy Klinker.

"We got a pretty good player coming in with Liz and a couple of girls that played a lot last year that are skilled. Jill is one of a kind but every year that's what makes it fun. Every year, you got different kids and different experience levels and so that's why we coach," said Gordon.

Gordon's players are also aware of the challenge. But they want a state title of their own and are ready to show what they can do.

"We have to take a big step now. We're going to have to work a lot harder and just be more competitive," said Taleigh Isakson, Eagles junior.

"Just compete hard and be positive to one another. I think we can do it - I'm hoping so," said Lizzy Klinker, Eagles senior.

Regardless of who is on the court… one thing remains the same. The Eagles have a culture of winning… 104 games in a row… and 4 consecutive state titles. But that's the past… and this team is looking to leave it's own mark… and realizing it's goal of winning a 5th state championship would do just that.
