Havre Blue Ponies Chase Repeat

Posted: Updated:
A state title doesn't always come easy. Just ask the defending Class A champions. It took the Havre Blue Ponies 16 years to win their first state title since 1998 and their fourth in school history. They did it with an impressive display of defense that allowed less than 38 points a game during the state tournament.

"We're quick still on Defense," says Blue Ponies Senior Morgan Mazurkiewicz. "Being aggressive and up in people's face. I think that's something that we'll still do this year. We're small and quick."

Havre loses five seniors who lead them to the state title, including All-State players Peyton Filius and Brandy Lambourne. But the team says that they will find a way to fill the void left behind.

"I think it'll be instead of two youngsters scoring 15 a night, it's going to be a culmination of four or five youngsters doing the same thing," says head coach Dustin Kraske.

"I think we're going to be the underdogs like always," says Blue Ponies Junior Dani Wagner. "We have a lot of potential. We work really hard, we're all good shooters and I think we're going to do some great things."

This year's squad is not only chasing another title, but they're chasing program history. The Blue Ponies are hoping to become the first team in school history to repeat.

"Winning it one time was everything. Winning it again would definitely boost that," says Blue Ponies Senior Tori Mazurkiewicz. "It would be unexplainable I guess."

"Winning as a junior was sweet. But winning it as a senior. It would be even better," says Morgan Mazurkiewicz.

The Blue Ponies are doing everything they can to make sure they don't have to wait 16 more years to win another state title.
