Saints Finding Success this Season

Posted: Updated:

It's year two of the Carson Cunningham era, and his players see the difference.

"He's putting all the pieces to the puzzle together, and he's just becoming a great manager overall," said Saints senior guard Zayn Kirkendoll.

There weren't many expectations for the Saints entering this year. They were picked last in the conference by many polls, Carroll is on the path to prove them wrong, but are keeping things in perspective.

"Coach talks about it every day in practice, and it's our key motivator," said Kirkendoll. "I think we're shocking a lot of people already. And when Frontier comes along there's going to be a lot of people that still underestimate us."

"We were picked dead last by a wide margin," said Saints head coach Carson Cunningham. "But until we prove that those prognositcations were not accurate, there's really nothing we can say."

One of the biggest reasons for the Saints surprise start this year is the improved play of sophomore guard Zach Taylor, who's scoring 18 points per night and leads Carroll in eight statistical categories, including the big three: points, rebounds, and assists.

"He's just a dynamic scorer," said Cunningham. "He's stronger, smarter, savvy, he's shooting well. He's doing so much for us."

"It's one of those things that's an intangible," said Kirkendoll. "He just has it. He knows how to score in big moments and it's great to have a guy like him on the team."

With guys like Taylor in the fold, as well as freshman post Oliver Carr who's second in scoring at 16 points per game, the Saints realize 9 wins is nothing to get overconfident about. But it can't be ignored either.

"Matching our season total from last year is awesome, but we're not satisfied with that," said Kirkendoll. "We want to achieve the highest that we can do. Frontier championship, national tournament, hopefully a national championship."

From the bottom of the conference, to thoughts of a conference title. These Saints are taking it one step at a time, but those steps appear to be in the right direction.
