Argo Men Rout King’s University

Posted: Updated:

If there was any rust remaining from a nearly two-week layoff, the University of Great Falls men's basketball team quickly knocked it away.

The Argonauts routed visiting King's (Alberta) University 76-31 Thursday at the McLaughlin Center in UGF's first home game since late November.

“There's always something you want to work on going into every single game,” UGF head coach Anthony Owens said. “We're going into league play and there are guys that I'm trying to get on the court and have execute a little bit better.”

It was also UGF's first game since the Argos (10-3) upset No. 1 Cal State San Marcos 74-71 Dec. 20 in Chandler, Ariz. The Argos put together a 2-1 showing at the three-day Chandler-Gilbert Classic.

“It was good knocking off San Marcos, but we just didn't take care of business against (defending national champion) Vanguard,” Owens said, referring to the Argos' lone loss in the desert. “That was the only disappointment I felt.”

Thursday the Argos jumped out to a big lead early and were up 46-12 at the break. Twelve different Argos saw the floor in the victory as Owens continues to determine his playing rotation in anticipation of conference play, which begins next weekend.

“Our starting five has done a pretty good job,” Owens said. “Our top seven really has done a pretty good job. It's eight, nine and ten that are inconsistent. Once we get that consistent play out of them I think we'll be all right and able to compete.”

Matthew Hurn scored 12 points to lead the Argos, who also received 11 points from Marcus Hurn, Sigman Farmer and Dalton Groenewold. TJ Harris added 10 points, and Darren Lockett grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Argos face King's again Friday at 1 p.m. at the McLaughlin Center. UGF opens Frontier Conference action Jan. 9 against No. 21 Lewis-Clark State at home. That game begins at 7 p.m.
