Bighorns Trefry Having Unbelievable Season in Memory of Grandfather

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - On August 9th Nick Trefry had just bought a new truck in California, and decided to take a trip to see his grandpa Allan to show it to him since the very next day he'd be heading to Helena to start his career with the Bighorns.

"I remember him saying to floor the gas peddle," said Trefry. "And my grandma was in the back saying 'No don't do it! No don't do it!'"

That was the last time Nick would see his grandpa. He passed away from leukemia on September 28th, just nine days into the Bighorns season.

"I had to make the call whether to go back with his funeral or to stay and play hockey. And one of my last conversations with him he told me to stay and play hockey."

So that's what Nick did. He stayed and played hockey - great hockey. Nick is currently tied for second in points amongst defensemen in the NA3HL. He says this year is all about his grandpa Allen.

"I always think he's watching," said Trefry. "I do whatever I can to make him proud. Before every game, I find a little spot to myself, and I pray, and I just ask to honor him."

Nick's play has certainly done that, but knows his grandpa would want more for him than just hockey.

"He'd want me to take the scoring title for defense," said Trefry. "And definitely continue on to college hockey and get my education."

And to 'put the pedal to the floor and never let up' in both hockey, and life.
