Rob Tesch Proud to Be Named Montana's Top Boys Basketball Official

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - East Helena resident Rob Tesch is best known for his time playing for the Montana State football team, where he's currently third in career receiving yards. On the gridiron Tesch always played to the whistle, but now a days, on the basketball court, he is the whistle.

"I enjoy giving back to the kids, giving back to the high schools, the community," said Tesch. "Youth sports is key to me."

Rob was recently named the prep boys basketball Official of the Year for the 2014-15 season. He's been officiating for 14 years now, and says he's learned a lot over that time.

"Tremendous amount of learning curve," said Tesch. "We spend hours of education, hours of training, hours of film study to get plays right, calls right, rules knowledge, things of that. Each possession we make several hundred decisions," said Tesch. "So in the big scheme of things if we miss two or three we're okay with that."

Rob doesn't expect perfection from himself during games, nor does he expect that from those playing and coaching the game. And his approach is appreciated.

"Rob is a very consistent referee," said Capital Bruins head coach Guy Almquist. "At least for me, when I'm thinking about the best referees in the state you want someone that is consistent, knows their job is important to the game, and wants to make sure it's consistent on both sides."

"I think there's no better compliment you can give a ref than you know what you're going to get out of him every time," said Helena Bengals head coach John Hollow. "He's consistent, doesn't have too many highs and lows. And to me that says something as a ref."

As the post-season nears Rob is getting ready for a busy next month. What has made him the best at what he does is that he appreciates the big moments, letting the kids, not the whistle, determine the outcome on the court.
