Glendive Water System Back Online After New System Installed

Posted: Updated:

GLENDIVE, Mont. (AP) - The city of Glendive's water system is back online after being shut down when residue from an oil spill along the Yellowstone River was detected at the water plant's intake.

The city on Saturday had advised 6,000 residents to conserve water because an ice breakup on the river apparently released oil that had been trapped in the ice since the Jan. 17 spill.

The water plant was shut down to protect against a repeat of the contamination that got into the system in the days after the spill, forcing residents to rely on bottled water.

Crews on Sunday installed an aeration system to remove any oil residue traces.

The broken pipeline spewed about 30,000 gallons of crude into the Yellowstone River. Very little of the spilled oil has been recovered.
