Saints Open Up Spring Football Looking to Fill Holes

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - Football is back in the capitol city as the Carroll Saints kicked off their spring practices on the first day of spring.

"It was exciting," said Saints senior quarterback Mac Roche. "All the guys that were out here were flying around. We were just excited to be out here playing football again."

Quarterback Mac Roche will need some new weapons this season after losing his top two wide outs as well as Carroll's all time leading rusher Dustin Rinker. That means it's next man up for the Saints.

"Mac has some young receivers, but he's got Simac back, and Kyle Griffith," said Saints head coach Mike Van Diest. "We've got Troy Arntson that we're looking at as well. So we've got some good young receivers that Mac will have to work with now that Anthony Clark and Jared Mayernik are gone."

"I obviously feel comfortable already with Griffith and Simac," said Roche. "I've been working with them for a few years. Troy had a touchdown today. Cam Nelson came out and worked with the ones today, and he did a great job."

Defensively the Saints will look to replace NAIA Defensive Player of the Year Sean Blomquist, but they're confident that their returning starters can make up for that loss.

"We've still got Durbin, Connor, and Osbourne at outside and inside backers," said Van Diest. "We've got DeBruckyer and Tucker, and James Dowgin at the safety spots. And we've got a whole bunch of guys at corner. We've got our top five corners back."

"Our entire secondary is back," said Roche. "And they did a great job today. They broke up a few of my passes. But for day one the defense looked really good."

With lots of moving parts for the Saints they've still got a few weeks to figure it out before their spring game on April 11, in which they'll host the Griz for their spring game as well.
