Group Plans Fishing Trip for Vets

Posted: Updated:
What started as an effort to take a handful of veterans on a fishing trip is quickly taking off.  A few months ago, Scott Zeitner and Mike Anderson are organizing the Montana Warriors on the Water project as an extension of Walleyes Unlimited of Montana.  They have invited 18 veterans to join them for a week-long fishing trip at Hell Creek State Park in June.  The group includes veterans from as far away as Alaska and Virginia, as well as several Montana vets from Billings, Bozeman, Florence and Miles City.

"Some of these guys have been combat wounded, some have P-T-S-D issues.  Other don't have any issues, but it's going to give them an opportunity as a group," Zeitner says.  "They can sit down and talk with guys who are going through the same things they've gone through, dealing with some of the same issues and maybe open up some avenues, create some new bonds of friendship."

The trip is scheduled to begin on June 8.  In addition to fishing, vets will be treated to a lakeside concert by Patten and Goff, who are also active-duty members of the 82nd Airborne, and a steak barbeque dinner.

Zeitner says private cabin owners are helping with accommodations, and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is also donating the use of campsites and a Group Use building.  Local businesses and individuals are helping out with meals.  The group is still seeking donations to help with costs of transportation and fuel.  Donations maybe be made at the Stockman Bank or First Interstate Bank in Miles City, or can be mailed to:

P.O. Box 832
Miles City, MT 59301

After the groundswell of local support and interest from vets and their families, Zeitner and Anderson are already starting to look to the future.  If things go well with the first outing, the Montana Warriors on the Water fishing trip could become an annual event.
