Speedy Bobcat Receivers Preparing for Big Season

Posted: Updated:
They say there's one thing you can't teach on a football field, and this year's Bobcat receivers have a lot of it.

"I believe speed kills honestly, especially in this conference,” said Coach Cody Kempt. “If you can stretch the field, if you can run fast, then you're probably going to be pretty successful."

A year ago, the Bobcat offense saw what speed could do with receivers Justin Paige, Jayshawn Gates, and Mitch Herbert combining for 9 touchdowns, and all three return for their sophomore seasons.

"I think the ability is limitless honestly,” said Coach Kempt. “As long as these guys work to get better every single day, which I know they will, then I feel very good about the future."

Mitch Griebel also returns for the Bobcats.

The sure handed senior led the team in both receptions and receiving yards last season.

"I've had to take on the leadership responsibility for the last couple of years,” Griebel said. “So I wouldn't say it's too much different. Obviously, there's a little more pressure being my senior year. There's a little more butterflies going into the season, but I can't wait."

But the speed doesn't stop there.

Baylor transfer Brandon Brown joins the group as a threat down field.

"I think me personally; I kind of bring experience because I'm a junior,” Brown said. “I've been playing for a while. My speed is probably my best weapon. I've been playing football for a long time and love the game."

With a variety of weapons at receiver, the Cats have high expectations, hoping to cause nightmares for opposing defenses.

"People underestimated us last year,” said Griebel. “We kind of started to prove ourselves and put ourselves on the map. We're probably even more scary than last year for sure. The Big Sky better watch out for the Montana State receiving core."
