Simms Vigilantes Ready for Season, Looking to Repeat as MYRA State Champions

Posted: Updated:

The Simms Vigilantes are back on the field, and the defending MYRA state champions are excited about starting their journey for another state title.

"Really excited. Finally got a little bit of sun so we're real excited. We're going to go out and hit and play a game we love," said Vigilantes Sr. Devan Goode.

"We're excited. It's our 11th year at Simms and last year won the state championship and were undefeated and lost a lot of great players off that team but we have a lot of great returners," said Vigilantes head coach Russ Bloom.

Some of those returners include inside center senior Devan Goode, prop senior Zach Clausen, scrum senior Kuskey Sakaye and fly half junior Jake Bloom. And it's on these experienced players to help bring along the younger ones.

"That's more what our veteran players - me, Devan, Kuskey and all them guys. We're teaching the younger guys how to play this game," said Zach Clausen.

"We have a lot of seniors that left so we have to re-train new people and basically get them up to 3 years of speed so we have to get up to where we were last year," said Goode.

Which was the state championship. And despite having younger players and a more difficult path to get there, the goal remains the same.

"Our goal is to win state and I told the boys, I expect to win state. Now, last year, we had the dream team. We were the favorites going in and we're not the favorites this year but our boys are smart rugby players and I think that's what sets us apart from so many other teams. Our boys understand the game," said coach Bloom.

Well they didn't lose a single game last year. The Vigilantes have proven they're a well-coached and well-disciplined team that's capable of a lot of success. But they'll have to prove it again this year since everyone will be gunning for the reigning state champs.
