UGF Softball Sweeps Carroll

Posted: Updated:

The University of Great Falls softball team swept first-year rival Carroll College 7-6 and 6-4 Friday afternoon to take both ends of a Frontier Conference doubleheader.

UGF improved to 20-10 overall. Carroll fell to 7-21 overall.

The Lady Argos have now won five straight – all over the Saints after three wins in four games last weekend.

In Friday's opener UGF plated all seven runs in the second and third innings and had to hold on as the Saints cut the deficit to one in the seventh before winning pitcher Keeley Van Blaricom got the final out.

Van Blaricom went the distance in the circle as she fanned one while walking four and allowing five runs – four of which were earned. She out-dueled Carroll hurler Megan Gipe, who shut out UGF last weekend for Carroll's one victory in six tries against the Argos.

Gipe struck out three and allowed seven runs – five earned – on 11 hits.

UGF erased a 1-0 deficit with a four-run second inning in the opener. Morgan Robinson had a two-run double, and Mindy Larson added a two-run single.

The Lady Argos tacked on three more in the third thanks to a two-run home run from Van Blaricom and a solo shot from Chloe Cross.

Alex Lowry doubled among her three hits while Robinson, Cross and Kayeley Lyons each had two hits for UGF. Cross scored twice, while Robinson, Larson and Van Blaricom all drove in a pair.

In the nightcap UGF trailed 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh, but five Carroll errors led to five unearned runs as the Lady Argos took the second contest.

UGF once again pounded out 11 hits, but couldn't take advantage until the final inning. Kirstie Thomas had three hits and Lyons had two – including a double. Kylie Prough drove in two runs and Van Blaricom scored twice.

Thomas earned the win in relief of starting pitcher Shelby Abeyta as Thomas pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings. Abeyta allowed four runs – just one of which was earned – and fanned two while scattering nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Lady Argos and Saints play another doubleheader Saturday. The first game begins at 1 in Helena.
