Helena Senators Using Speed Over Power in 2015

Posted: Updated:

That call is something the Helena Senators are hoping to hear plenty of this season, as they plan to use speed over power.

"We have to be willing to take chances," said Senators head coach Dave Thennis. "We have to steal bases. We have to take extra bases on base hits. We have to push it a little bit."

"Everyone gets caught, you've just got to be ready for that," said Senators junior infielder Koby Griffin. "You've just got to work as hard as you can to get there, and if you get caught you've just got to put it behind you."

The Senators are loaded with speed this year, which will help with that aggressive base running. But they won't just be using it to swipe bags. They're hoping to use it to rob opposing teams of base hits.

"You can space people out more, you have more range in the field so that you can get to the balls faster," said Griffin. "You can gets out quicker, and look sharper, everything."

"Defensively we look pretty good in the infield so far, we've got a ways to go," said Thennis. "We look good there and we've got some guys in the outfield that can move around too."

With no big hitters to speak of, the Senators will need to make sure they don't find themselves in a hole early. And that starts with pitching.

"We've definitely got good pitchers this year," said Senators senior outfielder Chase Rook. "We've got a couple of guys that are here just for pitching that are really good. They've got just that to focus on. They don't have to worry about defense, hitting, they can just focus on their pitching."

"If we throw strikes we've got a shot," said Thennis. "We've got a group of guys that will throw a lot of strikes."

We'll see if the speed over power philosophy works for the Senators this year as they look to run their way to a winning season.
