UGF Rodeo Team Making Push for Nationals

Posted: Updated:

Just in their 5th season, the UGF Argos have established themselves as a solid program. Out of nine teams in the Big Sky region this year, both the men and women are currently ranked 4th, but they want to be among the best 22 in the nation.

"I think they're ready. I think they're ready to take on the challenge and step up that next step to go compete enough to go on to nationals," said Dick Lyman, UGF rodeo head coach.

For the men, it might be out of reach as a team. The top 2 from each region advance and the Argos only have seven cowboys and currently sit in 4th place, trailing 2nd place Montana State by 18-hundred 50 points. So for them, getting to Casper, Wyoming has become an individual goal.

"We have one calf roper lined out to go right now, he's 3rd in the region, doing really well, tough freshman and great calf roper. And then our steer wrestler, we have two of them that made fantastic runs in Bozeman and it's wide open in steer wrestling, they have a real chance," said UGF junior Othniel Harkins.

The women are also in 4th place, but their climb to the top of the standings isn't as daunting trailing 2nd place Montana by just 260 points.

"Our girls team is really tough this year. We have three seniors and a freshman on the points team. We're knocking down the doors on nationals and we're really excited we're covering all the events for roping, barrel racing and goat tying, so if we can get to nationals it'd be a dream come true for us," said UGF senior Jaylyn Garrison.

A dream that can be in part fulfilled right here in Great Falls. With just three rodeos left in the season, one of them is at Four Seasons Arena and UGF is hoping to perform well in front of their home fans.

"My kids are excited to be able to come to great falls and be able to be competitive and be able to take a buckle home from their hometown rodeo and we just hope that we'll have everyone keyed up," said Lyman.

Well the door is open for the Argos. The opportunity for them to make a charge up the standings is there. They just need to tie it down.
