UGF Softball Prepares for Conference Tournament

Posted: Updated:

The Argos Softball team will get a small taste of their future this weekend when they compete in the Cascade Conference tournament. UGF and Carroll will become associate members of the Cascade Conference next season but the Argos are looking to make a strong first impression now.

"That's our number one goal," says junior outfielder Alex Lowry. "We want to make a name for ourselves. At UGF, our girl's basketball team made a name for themselves going to nationals and we want to do the same. We're ready to do it."

"It's kind of cool because I think we're the under dog," says Senior First Basemen Kayeley Lyons. "I don't think anybody is expecting us to come out on top. But we as a team, we know that we're ready."

UGF has a combined record of 2-3 against opponents they'll see in the tournament, which includes wins over ranked teams Concordia and Oregon Tech. The Argos head to Oregon winning 11 of their last 17 games and they could be peaking at the right time.

"Keeley has thrown two really good games and Alex Lowry has really broke open with her hitting," says head coach Joey Egan. "So everybody is kind of stepping up but our hitting game is definitely growing to where it needed to be."

"Our batting lineup is strong. One through nine," says Lowry. "So if we can get our bats going and have our defense on which is usually the key, we'll do good."

And their shortcomings in the last two years could be their biggest motivator.

"The past two years we've gotten second in our conference and this year going into the conference tournament we need to place second or better to make it to nationals," says Lowry. "And we've got a great shot."

The Argos open the tournament against Southern Oregon on Friday at 10 a.m. Montana time. They fell to the Red Raider 4-1 back in February.
